With so many herbal remedies on the market that promise weight loss, it is important to educate yourself prior to using them. A person should know if the herbal supplement actually promotes weight loss or if it is just a waste of money. It is also essential to know if the supplement could cause any possible harmful side effects. Common Herbal Supplements Used for Weight LossChitosan: This supplement is used to control appetite and promote weight loss. Side effects include headache, constipation and swollen heels and wrists. It not recommended for use in people with an allergy to shellfish or people with a coagulation disorder. There is currently no evidence to support the use of this supplement in weight loss. Chromium Picolinate: A weight loss supplement that is also used to promote glycemic control in patients with type II diabetes. Side effects include kidney insufficiency, increased mental stimulation and dream activity. This supplement is not recommended to be used for weight loss. Ephedrine: This supplement is also called bitter orange, Ma Huang, country mallow, or heartleaf. Along with weight loss, it is also commonly used for euphoria, increased sexual sensation, and to boost energy. Side effects include increased heart rate, tremors, anxiety, psychosis, hallucinations, paranoia, seizures, addition, headaches and dizziness. This supplement is not recommended by the FDA because it can potentially cause heart attack, stroke and sudden death. Garcinia Cambogia. This is an appetite suppressant that is also used for bodybuilding, lowering lipids, and to improve bowel conditions. There are currently no known side effects or evidence that this supplement promotes weight loss. Germander: This herbal supplement is used in obese people to promote weight loss. Side effects include acute hepatitis. This is not recommended due to the possible liver damage. Glucomanna: This is a weight loss supplement that suppresses the appetite. It is also commonly used as a bulk-forming laxative and to reduce cholesterol. Side effects include abdominal pain, flatulence, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. There is limited evidence that supports the use of this supplement to induce weight loss in overweight adults. This supplement should not be used by children. Guarana: This herb is an appetite suppressant that is also used as an aphrodisiac and to decrease fatigue. Caffeine is the active ingredient in this supplement. Side effects include insomnia, anxiety, diarrhea, headache, irritability, nausea, seizures, increased heart rate and tremors. There are currently no clinical studies available that looks at the effectiveness of this supplement. It is not recommend to be used in pregnancy or if breastfeeding. Guggul: A weight loss supplement that is also used to lower cholesterol, improve acne and to decrease blood clotting. Side effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, hiccups, headaches, and restlessness. There is currently no evidence that supports the use of this herbal supplement in weight loss and it should not be used if also taking a blood thinner or blood pressure medication. Hoodia: This supplement is used for weight loss and to decrease appetite. There are currently no known side effects and no evidence to support the use. Pyruvate: This is an herbal supplement used in obese people to promote weight loss. It is also used as an anti-inflammatory and to treat diabetes and coronary heart failure. Side effects include rumbling in the bowels, flatulence and nausea. Currently clinical human evidence is lacking in support of the use of this supplement. Many people are trying to achieve a healthy weight and are turning to herbal supplements as a natural alternative for weight loss. A person should always remember that "natural" and "safe" are not always the same. By educating yourself on the side effects and result of herbal products you will be able to find a safe and healthy method for loss weight.
